Choosing a chandelier - Let's break it down!

Let’s face it, it can be tricky to choose a chandelier for your dining room, or any room for that matter. Not only will your design choice define your space, but there is so much to consider when making this choice.

Before you even begin to think about aesthetics it is important to think about your ceiling height, the length of your table and the size of your dining room. The chandelier should be work with the scale of your space without overpowering it. The fixture that you choose should be one-half to three-quarters the width of your table. If you have an extra long table, a linear chandelier may be the strongest choice. If you table is 40" wide and 60" long, a 24" - 36" diameter chandelier will be just the right size.

Your chandelier should hang 34” - 36” above the dining table. Often I encounter clients who are in a situation where they are not able to center their dining table under the chandelier and relocating the chandelier is not an option. In this case I recommend installing recessed lighting or selecting a flush mount fixture that will not draw attention. You can make up for the lack of a chandelier by placing a dramatic centerpiece on your table.
