A PERFECTLY IMPERFECT STYLED BED

So often I work with clients who have purchased new bedding in the hopes that it will elevate their bedroom, only to be left feeling unsatisfied as though something is missing. They have identified that something is not quite right, but still not sure what to do to correct the issue. There is certainly an art to styling a bed, but the good news is that there is also a formula.

My favorite pro tip to getting that finished look is to have layers. You’ll want to start by making sure that your duvet cover, quilt or comforter is harmonious in color with your sheets. Next, make sure to always turn down the top layer, whether it be a duvet cover, quilt or comforter. Your sheets will be exposed but that is ok, although it is ideal to layer a blanket or quilt between your sheets and duvet cover. If you tend to get hot when you sleep you’ll want to skip this step. Next, stack your bed pillows in front of the bed pillows, you’ll layer in at least one pillow such as a long lumbar pillow. Ideally you’ll layer 2-3 accent pillows behind the lumbar pillow. If you hate the idea of having too many pillows to remove before sleeping, just use the lumbar pillow. Finally, at the foot of your bed, place a blanket that stretches the width of the bed. The best strategy is to scrunch it into an accordion fold and pull tight on the ends. You want to avoid having the blanket to look too perfectly placed. It should appear a bit haphazard but still intentional. I’ve provided two examples, one is an image from studiomcgee.com and the other from stylebyemilyhenderson.com . For folks who live in a very cold climates, having a second duvet cover folded at the foot of the bed is a great look and it will have the added benefit of warmth on cold nights. This option is also wonderful for a guest rooms so that your guests will have an extra layer if they are cold natured. Get creative and use existing elements in your home to create a style bed with layers and dimension.
