THE POWER OF PROPER LIGHTING

One of the most important elements of building a successful room design that is often overlooked or minimized by my clients, is lighting. The power of lighting is misunderstood. So many of my clients express the desire for their spaces to be cozy and inviting, however when the topic of lighting comes up, they will tell me that their overhead recessed lighting provides enough light to illuminate their home. While this may be true, layering lighting is the best approach to not only create a cozy, inviting environment, but also to address their functional lighting needs. This can be achieved by using table lamps, floor lamps, task lamps and sconces. Using multiple sources of lighting in a room creates much need ambient lighting as well as task lighting. Using only overhead lighting creates an unsettling feeling in a room. When layering in a variety of light sources in a room, use this opportunity to choose pieces with interesting design elements. I just love this lamp with a raffia shade featured by saltbythecazaproject.com . Having a natural element with movement just makes it so interesting and I can only imagine the soothing light it radiates. You can upgrade an existing lamp by changing the shade, painting the base, or simply removing the shade and adding an Edison bulb. You can even mix both vintage lighting sources with new lighting sources. I think you will find this approach to lighting to be one of the most powerful ways to transform your home, not to mention that it is quick and cost effective!
